The holidays are here. People are traveling and spending A LOT of time with family. Sometime’s it just your own kids home from school or it can be extended family that you don’t see very often. Regardless, the big question during the holidays is not what should we eat, or what present should we buy, but what should we do? And also what should we do that is relatively inexpensive?
Now this blog post is for everyone that lives in a place where it’s cold, snowy, windy, rainy, or otherwise not always so pleasant to be outdoors. If you are living in beautiful, sunny place near the ocean I have no sympathy for you. Go hang out at the beach and enjoy the sun and stop wasting your time reading this post. You have plenty to do with the family. In fact maybe I’ll come visit you myself.
So here’s my list of inexpensive things to do in the wintertime, holiday season or not. Up here in Fairbanks where winter averages about 6 1/2 months long, I try and do all of these things at least once a winter.
- Ice Fishing
- Sledding
- Ice Skating
- Baking
- Build a snowfort
- Rent a public use cabin
- Bonfire with friends and family
- Involve everyone in a household project, such as building a woodshed
- Have a post-holiday potluck with friends. Everyone brings leftovers from their holiday meals.
- Board games, card games, or puzzles.
- Go for a walk everyday and burn off some of that holiday food.
- Ornament making
- Drive or walk around checking out the neighborhood Christmas lights, a personal favorite of mine.
- Go for a nature walk and keep a list of everything you see. Make it a competition amongst the family if your the competitive type.
- And last but not least, do whatever my kids are doing here, because it sure look like it’s fun.
